| 抄録: | As C.A. Schten pointed out earlier, the Roman Catholic Sacrifice of the Mass is at the center of the poem, "Christs bloody sweat" by Robert Southwell, S.J. (1561-1595). During his formation as a Jesuit, Southwell meditated much on the pains of martyrdom by using the Ignatian composition of place. In Part I of this essay, I will explore how his contemporary Roman Catholic martyrologies shaped his persecutory imagination in preparing his own mission to Protestant England, after explaining some historical backgrounds of the Elizabethan politico-religious controvercies. |
