Finite Element Analysis of the Erecting Steel Pipe Connection

Abstract: The experimental investigation on the bending moment capacity and the bending rigidity of the joint of steel tubes used during erection is described. This type of joints, composed of four steel plate fins welded in parallel to the member axis at the end of the tube, are commonly used during erection as a simple connection. The stresses from one side tube are transferred to the other tube through the welded fins and splice plates fixed by the high tension bolts and partly draft pins. Designer usually checks the extreme fiber stresses of the splice plates which give substantial cross section at the joint center section. But there might exist many unknown factors increasing the stresses at the joint such as stress concentration, unexpected local bending, eccentricities out of considerations. By conducting the finite element analysis for this type of connection, it is found that this type of connection has extremely low bending rigidities than that estimated by stress calculation.
