Abstract: After the previous report concerning the malodor around a paper-mill, we have continued the studies through the period of July 1983 to February 1987; the field surveys practised amounted to 8 times and the monitoring sites utilized 49 locations, and measurements were performed for the odorant concentration and the intensity as well as concentration of odor, and further, for some meteorological elements. The odorants we pursued were hydrogen sulfide, methylmercaptane, methylsulfide and dimethyldisulfide. It has been found that : (1) Hydrogen sulfide is always present at concentrations of the order of ppb and methylsulfide follows this. (2) Under the conditions that the meteorological elements remain stable, the odor emitted from the mill flows dispersedly down-wind so as to enable us to calculate the ground-level concentration by a diffusion formula. Results of the calculation will be given in the next communication. Using the data, we examined the validity of the Steavens' and Weber-Fechner's fomulae and applying the formula (2) in text, we caluculated the background concentratin to be about 0.2 ppb, its consistuent being inferred as principally hydrogen sulfide. Finally, mention was made of the odor circumstances in the area contiguous to the mill changing for the better.
