Abstract: | In the design of earth and rockfill dams, it is of great importance to predict construction pore pressure and deformation behaviors during construction. In the present paper, a conventional practically useful method of estimating pore pressure and deformation of embankments during construction is proposed. The main advantages of the method are to estimate built-up pore pressure from results of ordinary oedometer tests and to pursue pore pressure dissipation by using empirical relations between U (degree of consolidation) and T (time factor) which can be derived from pore pressure measurements in the field. In the comparison between the calculated and observed results for a typical earth dam, it is recognized that the proposed method is applicable in a sense of practical purpose, though the method has some inherent shortcomings in applying for moving boundary problems. |
