Abstract

The ratio of the number of the young people to be matriculated by universities and junior colleges to that of the total people of the generation was about 37.4% in 1979. The people who were admitted after the failure of the entrance examination for a couple of years (called as Ronin in Japanese) were taken into account in the above statistics. The figure showed the lowest level in these five years. The number of the applicant for the admisson, that of the people to be matriculated and that of the applicant to be admitted straightly from high schools without failure were also decreased. It seemed to be remarkable that the number of students newly registered to the private universities and junior colleges in 1979 was fewer by twenty thousand than in 1978. The present attitude of such an aversion for high education of young generation was analysed by statical method and the future problems faced by private universities were discussed.
