Abstract: | This is a limited investigation on John Steinbeck's literary works with a special attention to the relatives with non-human antecedents: that, which and zero. In the last analysis it seems that Steinbeck made a skillful use of the three relatives, whether consciously or unconsciously. That is, in the more successful works he always employed zero in objective case (except the case of the relative governed by a preceding preposition), and in subjective case he usually used that while he occasionally employed which, it seems, with a certain kind of significant distinction between the two which I believe there must be. |
