抄録: The Kaisho Forest is located near Aichi Institute of Technology in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. The Kaisho forest supported the livelihood of villagers and the local industries from the Heian era to the Meiji era by providing firewood and fuel for firing pottery. The purpose of this study is to discover a new incentive for conserving the Kaisho Forest formerly used as a fuelwood forest by performing fixed-point observations at the Aichi Institute of Technology campus and its periphery and examining the relationship between the environmental components, i.e. air temperature and humidity, at each observation spot. In addition, seeping tests were performed and the reaching distance of the cold air in the campus was determined to evaluate the cooling ability of the Kaisho Forest. The results showed that the highest air temperature became the lowest and that the cool-island intensity, which indicated the intensity for decreasing the air temperature, became the highest near the spring water in the Kaisho Forest. Cold air not found outside the forest was formed near the spring water in the Kaisho Forest, indicating that the Kaisho Forest forms a cool island. The cooling effect of the cold air flowing out on the eastern side of the forest was observed up to a distance of 2 m from the boundary of the forest. From 24:00 to 6:00 h, the temperatures in the 30?40 m section, which is close to the forest on the northern side, were lower than that inside the forest. We believe that the cold air rising from the forest at the bottom of a cliff on the northern side of the campus has a strong cooling effect. This study showed that there is a cooling effect on the campus grounds adjacent to the Kaisho Forest and that having a green environment at the periphery of a campus is important.
