Exploring the Possibility of Metaphor Learning Using Images : A Case of ANGER Metaphor in Japanese and Chinese

Abstract: Metaphor is an important concept in the cognitive linguistics. In this paper, we explore the possibility of metaphor learning using the images on the net. As an example, we show that it is possible for Japanese learners or Chinese learners to understand well the similarities and differences of a metaphor of “anger” in Japanese and Chinese, by retrieving multiple images related to “anger” on both Japanese and Chinese web sites. Both in Japanese and Chinese, the domain of anger can be understood in terms of fire by learners. This can be confirmed with the retrieved images that we present to them. On the other hand, the domain of anger can also be understood in terms of qi(気) for Chinese learners, which cannot be seen in Japanese. Unlike the metaphor of ""anger is fire,"" in which the aspect of heat has been focused on, the metaphor of ""anger is qi"" in Chinese is not necessarily to focus on the aspect of heat. This can also be confirmed from the retrieved images.
