Abstract: | V2 (Verb-Second) is considered to be typical for German Languages. Since English belongs to be German family, Old English and Middle English seem to show V2. On the other hand, it is considered that Present-day English does not show V2. Therefore, it is commonly believed that V2 disappeared after the period of Middle English. However, in the environment when an operator (such as wh-phrase) appears in Present-day English, the verb still appears after the operator. So, it is called Residual V2. Then we will explain why V2 remains as a form of residual in Present-day English. |
