Abstract: | This paper deals with the movie, Spirits of Wood and Metal, and the craftsmen’s ways of thought described in the movie. The Japanese title of the movie is The Heisei CraftsMen’s Challenge. What does the word, “challenge” mean? The producer of the movie says that the challenge means the craftsmen’s challenge to the skills to build festival floats. Such challenges are very important and interesting. And we can also find the craftsmen unconsciously challenged to the thought of the Heisei era. The Heisei era was in deep recession. Mammonism and utilitarianism were so prevailing in those days. The craftsmen’s works show that they are not influenced by such thoughts. They do their works truthfully as craftsmen. Their sincere attitudes challenge the people of the Heisei era to work truthfully. |
