Abstract

The preceding paper made clear that l'-Restriction is closely related with the Case-Adjacency Effect. We will investigate that what makes the adverbial difference between English and French. After that, we will try to propose the most plausible explanation. We already noticed these differences in adverbial behavior between English and French in Abe (1994), where the Clitic Phrase and the Mod Phrase play an important role. These phrases work as an escape hatch for movement of adverbs. However, owing to the development of the linguistic theory, we cannot deal with these phenomena as they are. We must revise our approach.
