Abstract

This paper is a biographical study of Charlotte Guest who is mainly known as the translator of Mabinogion, a collection of Welsh medieval legends. Her translation of Mabinogion into English was so great that her achievements in other fields are sometimes overlooked. She was a farsighted educator at Dowlais school and made many educational contributions to Wales. After her husband's death she played an important role as the leader of Dowlais ironworks in the difficult days of the iron industry. After she remarried Charles Schreiber, they traveled extensively and collected old English china, fans and playing cards. Those collections are now housed at the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. If we only think of her as a translator, it can be said that we cannot evaluate her highly enough.
