Abstract: | In Part II of this essay, I will discuss Southwell's perilous mission activities. He experienced house searches and long confinements before his own arrest and tortures. The pains inflicted by the Elizabethan authorities are also the pains of the Pelican and the Phenix in his poem, "Christs bloody sweat. " In contrast with the Protestant theology of pain by the Japanese theologian, Kitamori, the collective body as well as the individual body of the Catholic faithful can be transmuted to "the body of Christ" both through the Roman Catholic Mass and through their martyrdom. |
