Abstract

Ryotaro Shiba shows his great respect to Sima Qian who influenced him so much Rylotaro's novel, Koou and Ryuhou is based on Sima Qian's Shiji Ryotaro neither gives the outline of Shiji nor adapts its story superficially. He tries to look at the world where Ryuhou lived through Qian's eyes and reconstruct Ryuhou's world fundamentally by his own imagination. The world created by Ryotaro is unrefined and uncouth, which bears some resemblance to Osaka where Ryotaro lived. Ryotaro tries to give a clear image of the world and describes it in plain language. To look at plain facts and put them in plain language is the most important for Ryotaro who were forced to go to the battlefield by the military authorities of the Pacific War who concealed facts under sensational expressions.
