19世紀イギリスにおける民衆娯楽の衰退過程:C.Dickensの諸作品を手がかりとして

Abstract

The aim of this study is to make clear the process of undermining traditional recreation in relation to the social structure in the nineteenth century England. Charles Dickens' "Sunday Under Three Heads" is examined here. Literary works have been thought to be a useful means of assessing of sport. Literature makes it possible to analyse contemporary society more realistically than by social science, because it tends to show the time and society more vividly by its free imagination. To explain sport through literature seems to be most suitable approch. From this point of view, the process of the undermining of traditional recreation in the nineteenth century England will be discussed in this paper, mainly concerning Evangelicalism and traditional recreation in the works of Dickens.
