愛知工業大学における英語習熟度測定試験の試み : OCRと統計処理言語SASを利用して

Abstract

Our first attempt at giving English proficiency test at our institute was tried in 1982 and we could get valuable data from the survey. The same attempt was carried out in 1990 using an optical character reader which had been introduced to our institute a few years before. The OCR could make it easier and faster for us to give and mark the examination. The data from the OCR were analyzed on a IBM computer with the use of SAS language. The both served us excellently. We commpared the examination results in 1982 and 1990 each other and found that the result in 1990 was better than the other by 6.4%. Then we chose ten fields of students' English knowledge and abilities for our study, such as pronunciation, spelling, sentence structures, reading and writing abilities and so on. The results in 1990 showed a significant increase of the students' understanding of sentence structures by 11.42% when compared with the last survey. In contrast to the remarkable result, however, vocabulary showed its modest increase. The same tendencies were also observed among the groups when we classified the result in 1990 into three groups, such as upper, middle and lower, in the order of students' test scores.
