Abstract: What is "LL"? "LL" means "Language Laboratory." R. H. Walts used the word for the first time. But his system of LL could not be accepted and had been forgotten until World War II. The war attracted people's attention to foreign language education and brought about the success of ASTP. The enthusiasm for language education continued after the war. The development of mechanical devices, the new theory of language, and the government (NDEA) supported such a movement. LL spread rapidly throughout U. S. A. Japan was under the influence of such a development of LL. LL system changed according to the development of mechanical devices. At first an audio system played a very important role in LL. But recently a visual system attracts students' attention. Although formerly LL room was a room for hearing and conversation, it becomes a room for watching, reading, and writing as well as hearing and speaking now. Such a multifactorial LL system is our ideal LL.
