『暗夜行路』とその英訳に於ける「気持ち」について

Abstract

A Translation can give a new look to its original piece. It can express the meaning of the original more clearly. But there is a case in which the translator cannot find any word suitable for translation of the original in his own language. We can think it a negative element in translation, but we can think it an affirmative element because it can show the language's distinctiveness which cannot be translated. When we compare Naoya Shiga's Anyakouro with its translation, we can find a Japanese word, "Kimochi" which can not be translated easily. The aim of this essay is to think of the characteristics of "Kimochi" or "Ki" which has Japaneseness, and show why it is difficult to translate the word "Kimochi" into English.
