『ジェントルマン』概念と身体運動の史的研究 : Shakespeare.Wの諸作品における『ジェントルマン』概念と身体運動の係わりを中心として

Abstract

The original idea of gentlemanship in the pre-modern times come from that of Middle ages like other cultures characterizing England. Then the idea of gentlemanship has been changed in various times; the feudalistic times, the Renaissance times and the modern times. The idea of gentlemanship is so complex that we have much difficulty in establishing the basic idea of gentlemanship, for they had various way of life in each times; the pre-modern times, the feudalistic times, the Renaissance times, the modern times. Now in modern sports, it is said that the ideas such as sportmanship and fairplay comes and develop from that of gentlemanship of the pre-modern times. So it is significant to consider historically the relation between the idea of gentlemanship and the physical culture. Though we can find many studies about the relation between the idea of gentlemanship and the physical culture from the view point of the politics, economics and literature, we seldom find the historical considerations. So the aim of this study is to make clear the idea of gentleman in Shakespearian ages (16-17c) in relation to the physical culture. In order to perform this aim, I am going to investigate the idea of gentlemanship in the works of Shakespeare.
