Abstract: Carbon coating of photocatalyst TiQz particles were performed through sol-gel process in the aqueous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with or without ammonia and following heat treatment at high temperatures, 700, 800 and 900℃. Their photoactivity was evaluated from the rate constant k for photodecomposition of methylene blue (MB) and phenol (Ph) in water, and their adsorptivity for MB and Ph was also determined. Suppression of phase transformation from anatase to rutile phase of TiO_2 by carbon coating was observed. Photoactivity of carbon-coated TiO_2 heat-treated at 700℃ for MB and Ph was improved by using ammonia solution of PVA.
