Abstract: A high enthalpy wind tunnel, with Huls type DC-arc heater, is constructed and operational characteristics are studied. Many of high power DC-arc heaters for high enthalpy wind tunnels have Huls, segmented constrictor type or Hybrid type structures, and air etc. are used as working gases. The purpose of the present work is to study operating characteristics of a Huls type DC-arc heater including stagnation temperatures of heated air, and to investigate the range of applicability of similarity plot proposed by Kindler. Also this similarity plot is extended to another type arc heaters other than Huls type. These results are compared each other to find dominating factors to operate different kind of arc heater. Results show that all data are given in the form V/I ∝(I^2/m)^α with α= -0.7~ -0.8 for air.
