Abstract: Recently, making use of self-coupling effect of VCSEL, a compact distance meter has been studied. In this distance meter, self-coupling signal has been processed by FFT to obtain a distance information. However the real time measurement is difficult as FFT analyze takes time. Then a short distance meter based on self-coupling effect of VCSEL using Time Interval Analyzer (TIA) is studied. By TIA, the time interval of each self-coupling pulse is measured and the frequency distribution is obtained. Thereby, a distance is calculated by statistically processing the frequency distribution. It is found that the measurement error by TIA is 1/10 less than that by averaging the total self-coupling pulse, that is by using a counter.
