Abstract: Hyogoken- Nanbu Earthquake occurred at 5 : 45 AM, January 17,1995. The region of the seismic center is near Hokudantyou, Awajisima and the depth is 14.3km. The magnitude of the earthquake is 7.2. After the earthquake, the building damages at the district devastated by the earthquake are investigated during the total 6 days, dividing into two times. First, the Fourier spectrum and the response spectrum for the data of the strong-motion seismograph at Koube-kaiyo meteorological observatory are analyzed and the characteristics of the seismic waves near the region of the 7th degree on the seismic scale are grasped. Next, building damages are classified into wooden structure, reinforced concrete structure and steel structure, each damage photographs are showed and the causes of those damages are analyzes. As a result of the analysis, the characteristics of the damages for each class of the structures are grasped almost and many problems are pointed out.
