抄録: Though he is almost forgotten today, George Borrow was a novelist who was as popular as Dickens and Thackeray. He wrote biographical and picaresque novels such as The Bible of Spain and Lavengro. But today his fame seems to rest with his travel book, Wild Wales. Stemming from his strong enthusiasm for everything Welsh, he made a tour of Wales on foot in 1854. Wild Wales is a unique guidebook compared to earlier travel books such as Thomas Pennant's A Tour in Wales. Wild Wales is a biographical travel essay on Wales. In the book, we can see George Borrow as a staunch Anglican who scorns Methodists and teetotalers. We learn he is an extraordinary walker and lovers Welsh poetry as well as ale. Borrow depicted the mid-nineteenth century Wales and its people vividly and successfully. He could immortalize the beautiful country and it poor but warm-hearted people in Wild Wales.

抄録: Thomas Pennant was a naturalist, antiquarian, zoologist and travel writer in the eighteenth century. As a zoologist, he published British Zoology and this book made him a fellow of the Royal Society. His interest in zoology and botany brought him to Scotland and he wrote A Tour in Scotland and Voyage to The Hebrides which Dr. Samuel Johnson praised highly in spite of Dr Percy's bitter objection to the book. This book was the beginning of Thomas Pennant's career as a travel writer. A Tour in Wales was one of the most popular and important guidebooks of his time. In the book, he depicted the natural beauty of Wales, Welsh culture, the ancient ways of Welsh life, and the early stages of the industrial revolution in Wales. One of the most influential things Pennant did in his book was the re-evaluation of Owain Glyn Dwr. Pennant created a new image of Owain as a national hero who fought England for Welsh independence.

抄録: Elizabeth Davis (Cadwaladur) was a Welsh woman who went to the Crimea to serve as a nurse. Her life was recorded in 1856 by Jane Williams in An Autobiography of Elizabeth Davis, Betsy Cadwaladyr: A Balaclava Nurse. The highlight of the autobiography is Elizabeth Davis's remark about Florence Nightingale which differs from Nightingale's reputation in England then. Cecil Woodham-Smith, a biographer of F. Nightingale, wrote an influential biography and accused Elizabeth of escaping from Miss Nightingale's discipline. Because of this, Elizabeth became a notorious nurse in Woodham-Smith's book. However, Elizabeth's autobiography gives us a different image of Elizabeth trying to do her best as a nurse. Elizabeth's autobiography is very interesting and useful for us even today.

抄録: In this paper we shall first obtain a Riesz-type decomposition theorem of superharmonic functions with respect to function-kernels of potentials. Next, as an application of new decomposition theorem, we shall give some new characterizations of the regularity of function-kernels which plays an important role in the theory of Hunt kernels.
